Syabas, der Hersteller hinter den erfolgreichen Popcorn-Zuspielern der vergangenen Jahre, hat auf der CES-Presseveranstaltung “CES Unveiled” ein neues Gerät namens Popbox  angekündigt . Das besondere an diesem Player ist, dass er wohl nun deutlich mehr auf Internetinhalte setzen wird und durch eine Schlankheitskur in der Ausstattung schon zu einem Preis von 130 Dollar zu haben sein soll.

Hardwaretechnisch wird der neue Zuspieler auf eine interne Festplatte verzichten, jedoch durch die beiden vorhandenen USB-Ports und den SD-Karten-Einschub nicht weiter problematisch ist. Der Player soll relativ leistungsfähig sein: 1080p-Content soll nun in bis zu 100Mbps Bitrate verarbeitet werden können. Die Anschlüsse sind neben den bereits erwähnten relativ einfach gehalten und beinhalten lediglich einen Ethernetanschluss fürs Netzwerk, Componenten und HDMI für Video sowie Toslink und SPDIF für Audio. Syabas verspricht außerdem, dass das Gerät den Stromverbrauch unter 15W halten und keinen Lüfter benötigen wird. Desweiteren soll das 450g schwere Gerät mit 20,3cm15,4cm3,2cm relativ klein sein.

Softwaretechnisch hat sich ebenfalls viel getan. Das Interface der Popbox wurde komplett überarbeitet und bietet nun deutlich mehr Grafiken und soll schneller anzusprechen sein. Eine Neuerung gibt es auch bei den Applikationen. Diese sind nun per SDK erweiterbar, was die Plattform trotz stärkerer DRM-Maßnahmen (diese sind nötig, um eine Netflix-Zertifizierung zu bekommen) und eingeschränkterem Systemzugang trotzdem interessant macht. Syabas hat hierzu die DAVID -Plattform (Digital Audio & Video Input Device) angekündigt, auf deren Basis weitere Applikationen entwickelt werden können. Zunächst wird das Gerät nur in den USA ausgeliefert, wo es ab März verfügbar sein soll. Grund hierfür ist wohl die enge Bindung an Netflix. Derweil wartet man in Deutschland auf den Popcorn Hour C-200 oder nimmt einfach weiterhin den Popcorn Hour A-110 ;)
